So beside my weekly radioshow I do each week, I sometimes like to dip my toes into the beatcave with a themed mix. At present I've a got few different series on the go: jazz and latin (Martians Don't Do Digital), outer space electronica and techno (Journey to the Planet Blob), chill out downtempo gear (W&B Roadtrip) and deep house (House up my Strada). One mix series I've always wanted to get off the ground is one that would focus on my drum and bass roots. Unlike many on here I wasn't brought up listening to so-called 'cool' stuff from my parents like John Coltrane, Miles Davis or Stevie Wonder but quite the opposite. At 16 the last thing I wanted was that weird stuff. So I was left to my own devices to annoy the staff in shops like Andy's Records and Our Price in Peterborough naively asking for various dubplates I'd heard on my latest rave 8 tape pack. Mental. I was too young to experience a lot of the raves that were slowly coming to an end in the early nineties but before I got the chance to go down roads such as house, hip hop, jazz or techno I was most interested in drum and bass and bought everything I could get my grubby hands on. Over the years, as I started discovering many other styles of music, I eventually left behind my drum and bass days for various reasons (although certainly not the ethos) but I still have a hefty old collection of stuff that I simply would never sell.

So here we are then. 2009. I've knocked up what I hope will be a yearly mix of some of the tracks from labels and producers that I used to go crazy for between 1993-1999 - a nostalgic tip of the hat I suppose to my youth. It's a bit ruff around the edges and all done in one take with no editing but that's how we used to roll back then (shout to the direct drive massive!).

Oh and of course it goes without saying, there ain't an mp3 in sight - we were years away from that back then...

If there are any D&B heads from that era on here, hope you enjoy some of the tunes

;-)

Nice one Beane, didn't know you were from Peterborough. I know quite a few from there, now living down in Brighton. My mate Kieran used to work in Andy's records in the mid-90s!

Lovely mix Beane, bringing back a lot of memories. Favourite part was tune of the mix 'Just close your eyes and listen' into 'In too deep'...

Been loving this all week Beane, thanks. A few years after my main D&B era but love the styles all the same.

I can fully understand how you could never let go of these records. There is something innately special about D&B but can't quite put my finger on it.

All I can say beane is thank you fella.

This (jungle/d&b) was my first love. Nothing ever really came close since musically.

Stealth looking tracklisting as I expected. Can't wait to download this. Is about time I did a mix around this era.

Starting with the epic peshay classic too. Respect.

Big up!

MJ

Well, while we wait for dayo's 'soon come' comments (laugh.gif ) I'd just like to say cheers for the feedback!

Like I said, was a lot of fun to put together and I definitely found some old classics I'd forgotten about (lots of which will make volume 2 next year hopefully)

Re: Carlito's "Heaven" - The first release of Fabio's Creative Source label and one I may have to go on record and claim to be one of my favourite D&B tracks of all time, easily in my top 5!

Easy al - I didn't realise it had been 'rinsed' on the download limit

I've re-upped it to my podcast page - loads of space on there

Beane - this is totally ace buddy.

Listened to it for the first time this evening and it's going straight from laptop onto the car mp3 player (which is an honour believe me. The normal rites of passage is my laptop, then harddrive, then iphone, then car mp3 player. Jumping the middle two stages is practically unheard of)
