January 2009

1. Moodymann - Det.riot LP | KDJ 12"
After what seem like an age after hearing the "Freaky M.F" cut on various mixes and live shows Kenny finally let's the public have it. Masquerading as a mini album (although I like to think of it as an EP!) this pricey 12" has some lovely pieces inspired by the Detroit riots of 1967 with my favourite cut being the loose shuffler "4 One Night".

2. Onra - My comet | All City 7"
All City continue their adventures into the beatmaker's internal cortex, this time focusing on Onra and the now cemented classic "My Comet". Heavy

3. Dorian Concept - The fucking formula | Nod Navigators 12"
Where do you start - total bonkers 3 tracker previewing the forthcoming LP all set to drop in 2009 we hear. Pick a track, any track - there all nuts!

4. Hot Coins - Valiant Truth EP | Tirk 12"
First output on Tirk for the pirate and a superb 4 tracker of weird and wonderful leftfield disco and downtempo comsica. What that means I have no idea

5. Stacy Epps - Floatin' | Jakarta 12"
Forget that ridiculously priced 7" - head straigt for the 6 track release just dropped on Jakarta complete with instrumentals and further wonk hop in the fine form of "Cosmic Dust.

6. Jazzanova - I can see (Kaushik remix) | CDR
Tasty version - even in it's instrumental guise.

7. Je Davu - I need you tonight (Goodbye 11 edit) | N/A 12"
INXS? You what? Wait... drop in the dance and take a look at what's just happened on the floor. Now eat your words.

8. Joy Jones - This too shall pass (Daz i Kue remix) | Record Breakin' 12"
Killer EP all round with all versions doing it but particuarly like Daz's effort. Pure party gear. Wob wob wob wob.

9. Omar S - Psychotic photosynthesis (No drum mix) | Clone 12"
Wasn't massively into this first time it dropped but so glad Omar S released a beatless version. May see a little over-indulgent (a single-sided 12" in the credit crunch - ouch!) but well worth it. Soon to make an appearance on my next mix series "Journey to the Planet Blob".

10. Northgate 'A' Band - Theme from rocky | Dynamite Soul 7"
Balboa gets given a funky big band make over. Cheeky.

11. Emanative - When on earth | Futuristica Music 7"
Gorgeous limited edition 7" single action with a heavy nod to the sound of 4 Hero. Amazing stuff. Shout to Micheal Rutten for introducing me to this

12. Underwolves - Birdsong | Island Blue 12"
2nd hand gold find of the month! Absolute CLASSIC on the much loved Island Blue label.

13. Floating Points - Love me like this | CDR
Nothing more needs to be said that hasn't already. Let's hope for a release sometime soon.

14. Ianeq - The Light (Moonstarr remix) | Mental Groove 12"
My journey to pick up every Moonstarr release continues with gusto! Broken techy monster!

15. Byard Lancaster Meets Le Professeur Inlassable - Saint John Coltrane | Heavenly Sweetness 7"
Crazy, bleepy, crackly tribute to the Coltrane from a label that's really impressing me at the moment.

Great stuff Beane, like the comments to each track!

Emanative - yeah, nice little 7", need that!

Northgate "A" Band's version of Rocky is just brilliant, apparently a high school band recorded in 1977? Played it at midnight on NYE, should've had a camera to record the people's reaction - the place blew up! All about the drums on this one!

Funny you should chart the Byard Lancaster Coltrane tune as I've just got it in the post this morning!

Still need to get the Hot Coins 12" - essensual!

I'm intrigued by the Kaushik remix of Jazzanova - you know my email biggrin.gif

Since it's not in your chart, I presume you haven't checked out Roy Boogie's remix of Jacko's "Remember the Time" - I just can't stop playing it, and knowing your sound I just can't see you not feeling this one > http://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/332185-01.htm

Nice one Milic - good to see you around these parts again

yeah I remember seeing that Jacko 7"... not a bad little party tune!

that rework of Jazzanova was posted up on here by Kaushik (carefully not to be confused with Stones Throw's 'Koushik!). Can't find the thread but he's more than happy to send stuff out

February 2009

1. The Detroit Experiment - Think twice (Henrik Schwarz remix) | Test 12"
First big tune of 2009. Smack. Can you better the original? Probably not but Henrik gives it his own personal touch and the mother just builds and builds as transforms one of my favourite tracks into something monstrous. Keep your eyes open for the Mark E mixes doing the rounds too.

2. Chas Jankel - To woo lady kong | Tirk 12"
The Basement Boogaloo classic "Glad to know you" gets given a loose funky instrumental cover version from Chas himself. Shout to beatnik for the heads up.

3. Scrimshire feat. Inga-Lill Aker - Certainly | CDR
A little preview of what looks set to be a strong year for the scrimpy one. Just dropped as a 7" on Wah Wah 45. Seek.

4. Five Corners Quintet - The hot corner EP | Ricky Tick 10"
Bit late on this but always had a soft spot for these Ricky Tick regulars. Another gorgeous 10" with all 3 tracks doing it for me.

5. Various - On the Spot Vol 2: A Peek at 60's Danish Jazz Dance | Ricky Tick LP
Lordy lord. Where to start? File next to the Cosmic Sounds / Perfect Toy compilations. Obscure and magical in equal measure.

6. Brand New Heavies feat N'dea Davenport - Stay This Way | Delicious Vinyl 12"
Shout to Feelmusic. 1991 gem snapped up on repress. Nearly 20 years old! WTf?!?

7. Bukola - Hypnotised (Marc Mac / Domu remixes) | Slip Discs 12"
All mixes do it. Simple. From Marc Mac's head nodder to Domu's disjointed cruncher.

8. Spy Music - Cloak | DMS Country 12"
Broken re-interpretation of the original 2000 black houser from a few years back. Missed it first time round so when I saw it in a sale for 5p (that's right - 5p!!!!!) I wasn't gonna let it get away again.

9. Rahaan - Use your imagination (Re-edit) | Kat 12"
BIG disco belter gets put through the mysterious Kat blender!

10. Omar - Best by far (Aaron Jerome re-edit) | CDR
Seems like hardly a month goes by without an AJ production in my monthly charts! More sublime stuff from the london beat maker

11. Marvin Gaye - Mercy, mercy me (Victor Rosado re-edit) | East End 12"
Take one beautiful 4 minute original and loop it up to create a gorgeous 9 minute epic. Brilliant.

12. Abraham - Magpie (Morgan Geist remix) | JBO 12"
Wow - 2nd hand find that's simply beautiful from about 5 years ago. Where was I when this originally dropped? Need more Morgan Geist in my life.

13. Miroslav Vitous - New York City (Victor Rosado re-edit) | East End 12"
After first being introduced via Bob Sinclair some 10 years ago (remember his french house monster by the same name?) I'd always wondered what he'd sampled it from. Long, very funky and very large. Made even more monstrous with an extended edit by Victor Rosado of this 1976 classic.

14. Dam Funk - Rhythm Trax IV | Stones Throw LP
Squelchy, dirty, wonky, crazy synth-tastic boogie. Brilliant. Can't wait to drop some of this at the forthcoming boogaloo

15. Derrick Laro & Trinity - Don't stop till you get enough | Joe Gibbs Music 12"
Awesome cover of the Jacko classic, re-issued on a nice thick 12" after being hidden away on an old Soul Jazz comp.

March 2009

1. Sir OJ - Lightsabermass | CDR
Christ in a strawberry muller yogurt. That crazy Darth Vader & Obi-Wan Kenobi beat finally lands into my hands. The infamous lightsaber dual wonked up good and proper by the OJ. Shout to the scaloni for the heads up.

2. Alessi - Saving the day (The Revenge re-edit) | Jiscomusic 12"
Who you gonna call? That's right, the Alessi track from the Ghostbusters movie gets given a re-tweak and a much needed extension (the original was far too short). Big shout to Danny Donnachie on this and I can't believe I missed it first time round. Don't sleep on the Stevie Wonder beatdown session on the flip either

3. Harmonic 313 - Flaash | Warp LP
Oh dear. Hope your sitting down. Lifted from the superb full length just dropped on Warp, this twisted electronic beast sounds like it came from somewhere deep inside Skynet.

4. 2000F & J Kamata - Don't Know What Love Is | Hyperdub 12"
Lordy lord! Vocoder synthed up madness complete with strange fairground sounds and then some from the Hyperdub label. On it like Linda Lusardi circa 1988.

5. Orquesta De La Luz - Carnival (Kyoto Jazz Massive re-edit) | CDR
The KJM chop back some of the vocals and let the instrumentation doe the talking for a full latin sausage roll effect. A taste of summer. In March.

6. Djinji Brown - My beloved | Yoruba 12"
After having my face well and truly melted off from Fat Dog's mix last year, I had to go and hunt this out on Osunlade's label that I missed first time round. Deep steak bake rollerrrrrrr.

7. Scrimshire - All roads lead you home | CDR
One of my favorite cuts from the forthcoming album, all set to drop later this year I gather. Gorgeous instrumental string drenched beauty! Reminds me of the Hovis advert for some reason, maybe it's that nagging hook that just gets under your skin. Keep your eyes open for the full LP, set to drop on Wah Wah 45s.

8. INXS - Walken (re-edit) | Community Service 12"
After the ridiculous NYE Boogaloo party, no more INXS I hear you cry, please. Fraid so folks. After the Je Davu re-edit of "I need you tonight" from a few months back, this time the Community Service edit crew come correct with a strange old guitar stomper. It works, despite being a right busturd to mix (watch them drums!).

9. Slumgullion - Springers | CDR
One of my favourite tracks from the recent free giveaway instrumental album called "Disko" by the Slumgullion crew (who I gather are Sir OJ, Kid Nap & Dok). Larvely stuff indeed.

10. Maurice Fulton - We | Spectral Music LP
After digging in the racks for some outer space antics for my recent "Journey to the Planet Blob mix", I stumbled upon this double LP from Mr Fulton from 2000. I remember buying it and putting it to one side in the Noodle HQ due to my head not being quite in the right place. Fast forward 9 years and I'm finally ready for this album and it's been blowing me away, with the track called "We" giving me the most scrunchface.

11. Bumble Bee - Lady bug | Bee 12"
Nick Shaw classic alert! Re-issue flavour. Just like the sarg, very very odd but one that always seems to work on the disco floors.

12. Mr Scruff - Whiplash | Ninja Tune 12"
While the string of singles from the recent album have been leaving me a little cold this one grabbed me straight away. Scruff style brukage complete with Danny Breaks bangers. Large.

13.Poppee & The NY Squirrels - Bust that nut | CTI 12"
Best band name of the month goes to these guys for sure and from what I'm reading this was the only record they ever made, recently re-issued lovingly for the 2009 dancefloors. Strange discoid squelcher. Now bust that nut.

14. Dorian Concept - Fort Teen | Kindred Spirits / Nod Navigators LP
Aaarrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

15. Red Rack Em - Crowd noise | CDR
Forthcoming Red Rack Em pressure. Coming on like the unofficial follow up to "You can't pray for your soul" which was massively slept on but those that should really know better. Set to drop on Deep Freeze soon.

16. Hudson Mohawke : Polyfolk Dance EP | Warp 12"
First record for the Hudmo on new home Warp and what a debut. 6 tracks of unadulterated out and out utter wonk. Limited to only a few hundred copies I'm hearing so you best be quick.

17. Jazzanova - Of All The Things | Verve LP
How long we been bleedin' waiting for this then? Rather oddly, it seemed that UK was the last place this was to be released but it's here now and sounding great. Hardcore Jazzanova purists have been mincing about the slight change in direction (a move towards more live instrumentation and more commercial sound in some tracks) but I like it all the same with some brilliant collaborations from Dwele, Bembe Segue, Paul Randolph, Ben Westbeech and Leon Ware.

18. Various Artists - Death On The Highway EP | Five20east 12"
Fine 4 track deep houser but the one that's doing it for me is the Deep Space Orchestra's "City Streets". Lovely stuff and so nice to see more brownswooders throwing up some ace productions.

19. Mark Force - Running in the red | Archive 12"
2nd hand find and what a find indeed. Ruff and tumble brukkkkk lifted from a dusty basement on mansfield road.

20. The Prime Element - The Alborada LP | Kindred Spirits LP
I remember sitting on the fence with this album a few years back, maybe I 'dipped and skipped' to quickliy I dunno but after last years storming Red Rack Em jazz dance set down at local night Out to Lunch I simply had to get my hands on the track "Lola" from this LP. Absolutely stormer of a cut from a fine album

21. Platinum Pied Pipers - On A Cloud | Ubiquity 12"
Someone slap me with a kipper or something. How on earth did I let this one through the net?! The Pipers give a nod to the old Motown sound of old with this right old stepper. Peak time gear and I can already see this becoming an anthem down at our monthly Soulbuggin' night @ Moog.

22. Nebraska - Satellite Variations EP | Rush Hour 12"
Well "Father" is the real black gold on this EP (although it has been given a slight overhaul for 2009) but as I already own the original the track I was really after was "The Other Side" on the flip. Lovely beatdown style house that'll slip great into my forthcoming "House Up My Strada" mix series. Anyone know the vocal sample? It's doing me head right in.

23. Djazz - Djazz Vol 6 | Djazz 12"
Arguably one of the cheekiest re-edit series doing the rounds (just check the artwork on the labels of previous releases), this time it's the turn of Sarah Vaughn and the Dudley Moore Trio among others to get put under the scapel. As I'm not fully aware of the originals these are brand new to me but will go down lovely on sunday afternoons over on the Noodle Hotpot show.

24. Din a testbild / Number One Ensemble / Byron - Going Tutu / Back To Heaven / Too much | Flexx 12"
Balearic heaven or what!? Lovely 3 tracker for the beards, with the originals going for serious dollars it's a pretty all round tasty bargain 12".

25. Dam Funk - Hood pass intact | CDR
More 80's synthed up squelch from LA!

You know where to go to hear this little lot

:-)

you seem to have attached yourself to the same track on the Scrimshire album that I have - summery vibes alert aplenty

As for INXS though - COAB

They are as bad as the Police

April 2009

1. Bullion - Young heartace | One Handed Music 12"
Bullion's first 12" and what a superb 4 track EP it is indeed. Following on in theme from his brilliant "Songs in the Key of Dee" Beach Boys project, all tracks smash it but just edging it for me is the killer "Young Heartache". Pitch bending madness. This WILL be in my end of year chart - make no mistake.

2. Various - Undiscovered Deetour EP | N/A 12"
Well the story goes that some mysterious Japanese / London bloggers wanted to put out a 4 track EP of some overlooked classic balearic / disco-type anthems but not tell the buyers what they were. Fortunately for us, the distributers insisted on at the very least giving us the track titles, so the rest was left for the beards to piece together. 4 tracks, all offering something different, with my personal faves being the hugely overlooked Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney "What's that your doing" and summer- drenched scorcher "Deetour" by Karen Young. Limited to 500 so don't sleep.

3. The Simonsound - It's Just Begun / Bad Love | Project Blue Book 7"
Soon as I saw it I thought, please, not another cover version of this but luckily I gave it a listen and was instantly blown away. Dropping the vocals and original live-sounding instrumentation for some heavy Moog action complete with outer space effects, the much loved classic is immediately transformed into some kind of cosmic alien funk bomb.

4. DJ Cole Medina - Medina's Magic / Cole Loves You Insides Out | American Standard 12"
So the re-edit / re-work / call-it-what-you-want train rumbles on, unearthing yet more stranger and stranger source material. This time Olivia Newton John and The Beegee's get a good going over and what sounds on paper as complete insanity actually turns out to be 2 lovely long, beatdown style slo-mo house tunes that will go down a storm at the summer BBQs, terrace parties and outdoor beer gardens. Not cheap, and as always pretty limited, but worth seeking out.

5. Moodymann - Anotha black sunday EP | KDJ 12"
After the recent rather pricey Det.riot EP last month comes the follow up to break the bank for those not yet feeling the credit crunch. 5 more tracks, this time more on a jazz vibe with the blinding Jose James remix (previously released on Brownswood) getting a welcome inclusion for those like me who missed it first time round. Loose-limbed in flavour complete with typical Moodymann screams and whoops, this is worth getting for the outrageous inner sleeve picture alone.

6. Sherrick - Just call | Warner 12"
Massive shout to Liam Feelmusic for introducing me to this. Classic 80's gear. This has got Boatyard Boogaloo written all over it this summer.

7. Mugwump - Yanja | Disco 45 12"
One techy discoid house monster, play it to a house floor and then watch their faces as the extended horn breakdown drops in the middle. Comes out of nowhere. A very odd track but one that's been tickling me all month.

10. J.A.M - Quiet Fire | CDR
Forthcoming jazz dance pressure from Japan's Soil and Pimp Sessions players. Taking their 3 initials to form the name J.A.M, this is a 600 mph version of the Roy Haynes classic. Absolutely fire that is definitely getting dropped in my debut Out to Lunch Jazz Dance set in June.

11. Scrimshire - Mistaken (Original Album version) | CDR
As the album continues to garner support from right across the board this track for me stands out as one of my favourites. Already released in remix form on a Wah Wah 45s 7", it's the actual original that seems to be floating my boat more.

12. Collin Munroe feat. Joel Ortiz | CDR
Woah... strange vocal pitch bender. Oo-eer. Vocally, all over the shop and although I don't normally like these type of affairs but I'm all over this. Tasty like hot buttered muffins on a saturday morning - go seek out the video.

13. Blackpocket - U're A Star (Martyn Remix) | Fat City 12"
Slept on this for far too long but finally got myself a copy. Well out of order. Killer remix from man of the moment Martyn but also worth picking up for the heavy Harmonic 313 re-rub of "For tha D".

14. Loud E - Drums Dutour 2 | Ambassador's Reception 12"
Seems like a month doesn't go by now where local cosmic warrior Danny Donnachie doesn't point me in the direction of at least one amazing record via his superb Cosmic Dancing mixes. "Drums Detour 2" is one such record. Crazy, balearic, outer space sounds. Where the hell I'll play it I have no idea but a brilliant record all the same.

15. Little Carlos / Jackson Jones - Shake Your Body Down / Put Your Pants On | Jungle Jams 12"
Well in February's chart Jacko got given a going over by Derrick Laro & Trinity, this month it's the turn of Little Carlos as he reworks the Jackson 5 classic in a reggae disco stylee. I obviously missed this first time round (In 1981 I was only 5 years old!) but it's welcome re-release for a new generation. Flip it over for the excellent Jackson Jones cut and you have yourself a damn cheeky little 12" that's bound to cause some smiles in the dance!

16. David Bendeath - Feel The Real | N/A 12"
HUGE. Already got me thinking of the summer months ahead. Stictly for the BBQ heads.

17. The Dells - No Way Back (Black Cock Edit) | Black Cock 12"
Seems strange, it was only about a month ago I was having a conversation down my local about the rarity of the infamous BC records and then suddenly, REISSUE ALERT - they all start getting repressed. As the beards begin to tear their hair out in anger this is a welcome set of releases for those like me who were knee deep in drum and bass in the mid-ninties and missed them first time round. Top stuff.

18. The Sunburst Band - Man Of War (Remixes) | Z Records 12"
While the brilliant Henrik Schwarz remixes are getting a lot of the attention, please don't sleep on the fantastic Idjut Boys remix either which reminds me their old U Star output. Awesome. Yam Who also comes correct with yet more loveliness and if all that wasn't enough, we also get a nice extended mix of "After Dusk". Top package.

19. Blossom Dearie / Cavril Payne - I Like London In The Rain / When I Open Eyes | Potential 7"
Brilliant little 45. While Blosson Dearie seems to be turning a lot of heads it's the Cavril Payne track "When I open eyes" that is really doing it or me and I might even pluck up enough courage to drop this at the Jazz Dance. I can see em going wild to it.

20. Leo Zero - Message Of Love | CDR
Take one Freddie Mercury vocal, lay it over some heavy discoid snaking b-line action and bosh - you may have a summer 2009 boogaloo anthem on your hands. Tasty little nugget from the Elstob.

You know where to go to hear this lot

;-)

May 2009

1. Carlo Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson - Suite For Ma Dukes | Mochilla 12"
We're not even half way through the year yet but I think this might just be my favourite record of 2009. This EP of orchestral versions of J Dilla produced classics has already had two of it's four tracks included in my end of year charts for 2007 and 2008 ("Nag Champa" and "Find a way" respectively) but at last the official release drops with 2 more amazing reinterpretations. It's pricey, it's only 4 tracks long but by golly it's worth it with new additions "Fall 'n' Love" and "Antiquity" leaving me speechless.

2. Architeq - Birds of Prey (remixes) EP | Tirk 12"
Total utter wonk meltdown. Killer remix package with stirling reworks from James Pants and the Fulgeance to name just two. Put it on loud. Get a mirror. Watch the scrunchface in full effect. Be proud.

3. Junji Masayama - Green Cicle EP | Bearfunk 12"
Don't think I own anything on Bearfunk which is pretty shocking really considering their extensive back catalogue. Anyway, this grabbed me by the scruff of the neck Phil Mitchel style and wouldn't let go when I heard it. Tasty 4 tracker of housey bits but it's the title track that's doing the damage for me. Think Fulton sitting down after an alldayer on the pop and knocking one out. Proper deep 2am gear for basements.

4. Soundspecies - Starwars | Burntprogress 12"
A fine fine fine EP celebrating one of my favourite CDR producers with 'Star Wars' being my favourite cut here. Slow heads down hypnotising electronica of the highest order. Feel the bass wobble. Don't sleep on the Foreign Beggars hook up too on this EP.

5. Various - Jazz bizness 4 | Counterpoint LP
A ridiculous selection as usual from the counterpoint crew. One of the few compilation series out there that always tends to dig a little deeper and unearth some marvelous dusty rare shit - from spoken word style poetic numbers to blistering instrumental jazz bombs. Heavy.

6. John Arnold & Jeremy Ellis - Nightlife | Future Soul 12"
What a package - where do you start and what do you play? The blinding cover of Blair's "Nightlife" gets the Arnold and Ellis treatment. For those that may argue that their version stays to close to the original, then head straight over to the Daz I Kue remixes which ups the tempo and get's all squidgy. Whether it be the full vocal version, dub or instrumental - they all work and will smash the floors this summer.

7. Various - Tirk Sampler 2 | Tirk 12"
4 tracks from the forthcoming Tirk compilation, including the long awaited official release of the Hot Coins remix of The Joubert Singers "Stand on the word".

8. Floating Points - For you | Eglo 7"
Sun Ra gets flipped and put through the FPS blender. Ouch. Deadly little limited 7" with one of the heaviest basslines I've heard in a while. Blikey.

9. Scrimshire - Bluesky | CDR
Exclusive track from the album that's said to be only available on the Japanese version of the forthcoming album. You lucky buggers can hear it on the this months Noodle Hotpot show.

10. Martin Circus - Je m' eclate senegal | Disque Vogue 12"
Revival time! Thought I'd pull this one out for the recent gig I did with Quantic and woah, who took it out of the box?! French rockers Martin Circus go all, erm, senegal on us. Strange but very nice.

11. PPP - On a cloud | Ubiquity 12"
Missed out on the album but this was one of my favourite cuts off it anyway so had to snap up the single. Old school in sound with a nod to the motown sound from their home city of Detroit. This is a lovely new (old) direction for the Platinum Pied Pipers.

12. Jazztronik feat. Shacho - Heat | Mukatsuka 12"
While the J.A.M version on the flip of this 12" is getting lots of attention, let's not forget the blistering Jazztronik broken effort. Sure, the jazz snobs might be turning their noses up a little but it'll still destroy a floor played loud.

13. D Angelo Vs. Simbad - Devilz Pie | Gamm 12"
Well saucy. Gamm back to what their best at - putting out pure dancefloor fire. Simbad offers up two reworks here and I'm torn between which are my favourites. One side a broken beast that's already reserved it's place on the Broken Soul playlist while the other a little more mellow but equally heavy.

14. Floating Points - Shangrila | R2 12"
Eyes closed late night floater! Not enough for yer? Well, there's some track on the flip called "Love me like this" you might like. LOL

15. Betty Badgett / Arthur Foy - Sugar Daddy / Get up and dance | Luv N'Haight 12"
When it comes to unearthing those hidden gems you can't knock Ubiquity. South Florida's Betty Padgett's amazing "Sugar Daddy" get's given a release as a taster in preperation for her re-issue 1975 selt-titled album. Apparently a track that will set you back a few hundred dollars it's pure dynamite. But we ain't done there yet - check the Arthur Foy "Get up and dance" on the flip! Allegedly an even rarer soul discovery from New Orleans. Heavyweight indeed.

16. Critical Point - Messages (Aaron Jerome remix) | CDR
Sticking close to the original, Aaron slows it down a little and adds a little more bounce. An anthem that needs a serious revival and definitely getting a play at this months Bank Holiday Boatyard Boogaloo on May 24th.

17. Dan Akido - Pitch Black Blend | CDR
Moodymann given a twist from New Zealand! Naughty.

18. Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics - Inspiration Information | Strut LP
So deep your gonna need a flashlight. Well heavy album that needs some serious exploration.

19. Bonar Bradberry - Carlos The Jackal | Red Music 12"
Oh crikey - boatyard boogaloo better be ready. Damn cheeky Gary Numan-sampling squidger. Dancefloor dynamite from Croatia for the Alan Partridge crew. I've been keeping an eye on this chap since last years huge "Beat the Bed" track.

20. Sheharzad / Jens Loden - Yalla Yalla / First One (Henrik Schwarz / Andre Lodeman Remixes) | Fine Art Records 12"
Well schwarz comes correct as usual with another afro tech deep houser but don't sleep on the Andre Lodeman remix on the flip - firing!

You know where to go to hear this little lot

June 2009

1. UFO - Loud minority (Alex Reece remix) | Talkin' Loud 12"
Topping the chart this month is a track I've been after for around 13 years after first hearing it on an old 'One in the Jungle' mix. It's one of those tunes that seems to have haunted me for well over a decade so a massive shout goes out to fellow Soul Bugger Wrighty for sorting me out a copy.

2. 40 Thieves - Beats In Space EP | Rong Music 12"
Outrageous comsic disco wobbler! Rong return with more goodness as this label just seems to be getting stronger and stronger. This is getting dropped peak time at this saturdays Moog Birthday party for the bathface crew.

3. Jazzmine Sullivan & Waajeed - Jump off | CDR
So if we go back a few years, I remember the singer Jazzmine being hailed as 'the next new thing' on the then labeled 'neo soul' scene but she seemed to disappear into the wilderness soon after with not much in the way of an official release after those early tracks. Now, in 2009 with a recent Waajeed hook up we're given "Jump off", a lovely summery jam ready made for those BBQ sessions. Now, if I just had a garden...

4. Nation / African Liberation Arts Ensemble - Children | Soul Brother LP
After picking up a blinding african jazz compilation (that I'd missed about 4 years ago) earlier this month called "African Spirits" I was blown away by the epic "Children". Clocking in at an astonishing 11 minutes plus, it's a spoken word multi-layered monster. Complete with children singing, horns blowing all over the shop and stacks upon stacks of soul this hit me for six. Originally pretty rare I gather so full props to Soul Brother for re-releasing it and a big fish slap for me for not picking it up first time around.

5. Mayer Hawthorne - Maybe so, maybe no | Stones Throw 12"
An amazing new Stones Throw soul artist whose really turning heads right now. Following up his awesome limited edition 'heart-shapped' soul bomb "Just ain't gonna work it out", this cover version of the New Holidays little known monster is destined to be a huge summer anthem. Don't sleep on the flip "Wish it would rain" either - equally large.

6. Pepe Bradock - Ghost | Atavisme 12"
After a superb wine and cheese night hosted by Mr Red Rack Em where we sat round a table discussing the musical genius of monsieur Bradock a few weeks back, I was amazed that despite owning this record, I'd never actually listened to it. Of course we all know the anthem on the flip ("Life") but this needs some serious attention. Deep, haunting and light years ahead. Not exactly sure where to play it but it's going to go back in the box after years of neglect.

7. Big Kid feat Squ1rrel & Vicky Flint - A feeling | CDR
Long been an admirer of myhouse-yourhouse's very own Big Kid and his productions and this one has been on loop all month on the internal juke box. Dare I say it, slightly' dubstep but not dubstep' in flavour with some great electronic flourishes throughout, this needs an official release please!

8. Demis Russo - Love is (Dimitri From Paris remix) | Discograph France 12"
So this seems to be getting a bit of grief on certain forums I've noticed. Too cheesy? Possibly but I love it all the same in this Dimitri From Paris remix form. Screaming of summer and Croatian boat parties this could quite well blow up. Watch it get cained at this summers festivals, plastered all over a TV advert, then hammered in 'the caff' on Eastenders. The top 40 surely beckons...

9. Theo Parrish - Space Station | Sound Signature 12"
A new Sound Signature release always warrants a look in and this is bloomin' lovely. Coming on like the distant half brother of 'Sythetic flemm' but with an even heavier space theme. Expect this to surface on one of Blooby Parafino's superb Space Melter mixes very soon.

10. Dam Funk - Killdatmuthafu*ka | Stones Throw 12"
More fire from LA with this fine 4 track EP as a little taster to keep us on our toes before the long awaited album drops. Squelchy broken wonky synthtastic flavours a plenty with every cut a winner but nudging to the front of the pack for me has to be the 'Killdatmuthafu*ka' cut. Phew.

11. Seiji - A ravin' | CDR
A free give away from the Bugz in the Attic player Paul Dolby and a definite change in direction from Seiji as he offers us a blinding peak time housed up android flavoured monster, not too dissimilar in sound to the likes of Deetron & co. Very heavy indeed.

12. Blackjoy Disco Jams - Apollo funk | Blackjoy 12"
Blackjoy rename themselves and launch a killer double headed disco beast straight out of france. In this current climate of re-edits, it's nice to hear an authentic sounding original instrumental disco cut and a great saturday night glitterball floor filler.

13. Slum village feat. Marsha Ambrosious - Cloud 9 | CDR
Cripes! New villaaaaaaaaaaaa anthem alert here folks. Not sure if this will see the light of day yet but might end up being one of those things that floats around the internet for seven years. Let's hope not cos it's a proper giant cornish pasty. Big!

14. Burial & Four Tet - Moth | Text 12"
Ouch. Uber limited new collab from that mysterious hyperdub guy and the ever original Four Tet. On side one we get a super deep house cut while on the flip Burial goes all 'photek' on us with some a serious disjointed choppy beat session. Already doubled in price so if your reading this and still don't own a copy - forget about it.

15. Lone - Mon Ami | CDR
Brand new cut from local beatmaker as a taster before the new EP. Really love what Lone is doing right now.

16. Domu - Springbreak / Something New / Tickles | Tru Thoughts 12"
My favourite track of 2008 finally gets a legit release! Absolute fire that caused all kinds of carnage last year also sits on this sampler alongside blinding new tracks "Something new" and AC Lewis' "Tickles" as a little taster for the forthcoming "B sides" album due on Tru Thoughts at the end of the month.

17. Deep Space Orchestra - Moonrunners | CDR
Follow up to the much loved "City Streets" that made it onto the House Up My Strada' mix series. Deep and spacey baby!

18. Barry Miles - Magic Theatre | LP
A jazz dance classic that I first heard years ago on one summers afternoon in the depths of Dogma's basement where Record Room head honcho 'Skip' was dropping bombs upon the jazz dancers at the long running "Out to Lunch" session. It blew me away instantly, sounding like some kind of alien broken beat anthem from the far flung future. Amazingly, it was made the year before I was born in 1975. Intense, fast, very long and I'll be amazed if you can dance to it from start to finish.

19. Stacy Epps feat. Bembe Segue & AinJoy - Space tight | CDR
Outer space madness with a dream team partnership!

20. Weldone Irvine - Blast off | BMG LP
A track I've been revisiting recently after completely missing it while skipping through the 'Spiritman' album. Got it's dirty mitts all over my forthcoming jazz dance set at Out To Lunch here in Nottingham.

6. Djinji Brown - My beloved | Yoruba 12"
After having my face well and truly melted off from Fat Dog's mix last year, I had to go and hunt this out on Osunlade's label that I missed first time round. Deep steak bake rollerrrrrrr.

Baaaad tune.

Surely you heard this on one of my deep house mixes, old Beane? wink.gif

July 2009

1. Lone - Joyreel / Sunset Teens | Werk Discs 12"
Wow - just wow. Been playing some of Lone's stuff off CDR but so nice to have a nice thick vinyl. Still not entirely convinced I'm playing it at the right speed but eitherway - this is some wonky, weird and wonderfull electronica from local beat maker extraordinaire.

2. Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue | Warp LP
New outfit on Warp that have blown my mind this month. First we got given the 7" single as a taster and within about a week or so the full album dropped. Kinda like a cross between Onra & Quetzal, The Beauty Room and Matthew Herbert in places. Two of my favourite tracks have to be the title track and wonky hop thing "Fire Ant. One - a strange elizabethan merry go round, with the other a rather odd outerspace future hip hop future classic. Don't sleep on this.

3. Colman Brothers - Sem Amor | Wah Wah 45s 7"
Hot 7 inch heat I missed first time round on the ever excellent Wah Wah 45s label.

4. Mr Scruff & Kaidi Tatham - Bunch Of Keys / Cat & Mouse (Version 2) | Ninja Tuna 12"
Well, the recent release of "Cat & Mouse" hasn't even cooled down yet but bosh - Scruff drops a new version of the track on us - taking it into another direction with more squidgy bass, plinky plonky piano and and all stuttering beats. Kaidi Tatham pops in for brew on the flip with the downbeat warm up cut "Bunch of keys". Lovely.

5. Bleep District - Hooked on your love | CDR
A big shout out to local sauce monster Matt Rhythm for handing me this earlier in the month. Still work in progress I believe but I bloody love it. Just in time for the BBQ season and I'm putting money on this one being huge.

6. Lone - Cluster Dreams EP | Deal Maker Records 12"
Lone releases look they're gonna be like buses. Nowt for ages then all hell breaks loose. More superb adventures in electronic wonk on local label Deal Maker. Top draw.

7. Singing Statues - Persian prince | CDR
Free giveaway from Jack High under his new alias "Singing statues". Gorgeous downtempo vibes. More please!

8. Kaleta & Akoya Afrobeat - The spirit of Fela is alive and well (Guynamukat re-edit) | CDR
Summer afrobeat belter coming via Japan! Guynamite on the re-edit of this monster. Gonna sound great out on the terraces.

9. Guynamite - Mukatsuku CDR tracks
More from the Guynamite with forthcoming 80's-influenced pressure straight outta Japan on a boogie tip.

10. Commodores - Machine gun (Situation re-edit) | N/A 12"
Classic disco re-edit action that's getting lots of smiles on the dancefloor and lots of frowns from the dancebores.

11. The Long Lost - Amiss (Tunng Remix) | Ninja 7"
Love it. Kinda like a cross between Herbert and Quintessence with extra lashings of folktronica (is that even a word?!)

12. Natural Self - In the morning (Paul White remix) | CDR
Free giveaway alert. Shout to Tru Thoughts! Beatmaker man of the moment Paul White launches himself all over Natural Self's "In the morning" and creates a lovely little sunset jam.

13. Karizma - Drumz nightmare / Neccessarry maddness | R2 12"
Oh christ. One one of those records your not sure about at first until you play it to a dancefloor. Absolutely tore up the recent Soul Buggin' party with Domu.

14. Ron Basejam - Into my life | CDR
Brand new and good for you! Forthcoming on Winding Road I believe. Top draw stuff from the Crazy P man.

15. Courtney Pine - Trying' Times (Peshay remix) | Talkin' Loud 12"
So where the hell was I when this came out then? Another fine 2nd hand pick up offloaded from the wrightmaster....

16. Pepe Bradock - Path of most resistance / CU @ Minna & Lafayette | Atavisme 12"
So as usual, we get no warning, no prior alert just bosh. Scrunchface time. More adventures in weirdness from the frenchman with the third strong 12" on Atavisme.

17. Steve Marshall - Maintain (Disco version) | Dope Brother 12"
Bloomin' lovely. Just check the strings! In fact, the whole EP is dope, in a Kenny-kinda way. Oh dear. That was bad. Real bad.

18. Jazzy Jens - Africa | Gamm 12"
D'angelo gets done over for a third time by the Gamm crew, this time housing up the rare live version of "Africa". While I'm not always keen on soul tunes being housed up this seems to work. Bound to rub many up the wrong way but I reckon this is gonna sound lovely for the BBQ season.

19. Doomanji - No Time | CDR
Spacey slo-mo house from local monkey and good friend Dooman. Watch this space for his CDR Nottingham debut!

20. Michael Jackson - Butterflies | LP
Well, June ended with the loss of a true musical legend and as the tributes come in thick and fast and DJs sets get all jacko-heavy I'll be leaving aside the classics and opting for a few lesser-known gems to pay my respects with beautiful tracks such as 'Butterflies"

August 2009

1. Reggie B - Belief | U Beat CDR
Beat of the year? Quite possibly and kinda gutted it's not getting a 'physical' release but I'm loving it all the same. Amazing sick groove that just goes on and on. Could listen to this on loop all day.

2. Red Rack Em - Chinese Electro | CDR
Forthcoming deep heat from Nottinghams funkiest pirate. Proper bass wobble causing all kinds of face scrunching.

3. Rare Colour - CDR tracks | CDR
As Nottingham's CDR night goes from strength to strength it's always nice to hear new beats from local producers. Top stuff from Henry with my particular favourite being the housed up roller "Similarity".

4. Sofrito Specials - Tropical Discoteche Volume 2 | Sofrito Specials 12"
Wow. While the weather may not exactly be screaming of summer, this 12" certainly does. Sticking two fingers up to all the rain, we're given 4 awesome edits of tropical latin flavoured tracks that are all new to me. Fantastic.

5. Rainer Trueby - To know you / Ayers rock | 12"
Nope - it's not a spelling mistake. For some reason Rainer's doing an Afronaught and changing letters in his name for different releases, although it may be due to the fact it's a collaboration with the Motor City Drum Ensemble. Proper deep house that's tickling all my buttons.

6. Motor City Drum Ensemble - Raws cuts 5 & 6 | MCDE 12"
Oh bloody hell. Suddenly we've got a fight on our hands for house record of the year! As we enter my favourite part of the year for releases, it's always seems to be from August onwards that the race heats up. Following on in the vein of Raw Cuts 3 & 4, both sides of this are deadly. Going to sound so immense on a loud system.

7. Beatfanatic - Prince of darkness | Soundscape 12"
Well he's got so many different hats he likes to don but here, under his Beatfanatic guise, he launches this gorgeous slice of summery slo mo house on us. Why it's called "Prince of Darkness" I'm not sure, as it just reeks of sunshine.

8. Floating Points : J&W Beat / K&G Beat | Planet Mu 12"
The man has been on fire this year what with "Love me like this" and that crazy Sun Ra sampling "For you" 7 inch but this time Floating Points goes all 2 steppy on us with a kind of hybrid 12" - imagine aphex twin spliced with Todd Edwards - big!

9. David Gilmour - Blue light (Francois K remix) | White 12"
Originally done in 1984 I've been told but now re-surfaced as a very limited white label 12". Ignore the dodgy UNKLE remixes on the flip and keep the needle on this rockfunkdisco groove as Francois flips the man from Pink Floyd!

10. Footnotes 3 / Doc L Junior - You Do Know How To Dance / Baracuda | Sex Tags Mania 12"
Straight out of Norway and wow - one side coming on like last years Phlash and Friends album and the the other like Theo Parrish getting an EQ lesson from DJ Sneak! This will absolutely destroy a dancefloor.

11. Quantic & His Combo Barbaro : Tradition In Translation | Tru Thoughts LP
Long awaited Columbian project from Will Holland. He just keeps on getting better doesn't he! Strong tropcial-themed double LP just in time for summer and worth picking up alone for the great cover of Kitty Winters "New morning".

12. Stevie J - You! | CDR
Free giveaway from the Shook crew! Old school skippy Todd Edwards in flavour but given an extra twist in the mangler for 2009! Let's hope this see's the light of day.

13. Tom Browne - Bye gones (Aaron Jerome rework) | CDR
Edit king Mr Jerome comes correct with yet more goodness. This time giving Tom Browne a tweak of the nipples!

14. Various - Come back home / Going up in smoke / A message | Moton 12"
Said to be the handiwork of a certain Mr Dave Hill of ex-nuphonic fame, these edits are still under scrutiny as I try to fathom out what the originals are. All help greatly appreciated!

15. Stac - Glory (Scrimshire remix) | CDR
Lovely stuff from Scrimshire, hot on the heels of the success of his full length long player as he ups the tempo for Stac creating a lovely deep house excursion.

16. Bruno & Richard Brown - Wonky | CDR
Where to start? A track I've been hearing a lot about but never actually heard. Many thanks to Bruno for sending me this and expect to hear lots more unreleased gems on the weekly hotpot from these guys

17. Elan Mehler - A new breed (Dobie remix) | CDR
Taking the gorgeous original into a new uptempo direction, would love to see this released proper. Hats off Dobie!

18. Jimi Oh - First things first  | CDR
Proper heads down no nonsense electronic roller from our man in Leicester! Big props Jimi! Watch this man.

19. Soundspecies - Something New (with Emilia Martennsson Brazilya - part II) | CDR
A little late on this but loving this new vocal version of the instrumental classic "Brazilya". Big ups Tony Nwachukwu for sorting me out a copy

20. Orange Juice - Rip it up (Disco Deviance dub) | Disco Deviance 12"
Love it! 80's disco not disco given the extended dub treatment from the DD crew. A lovely way to round of this months chart

U know where to go to hear this little lot
