Just watched the exchanges b/w Gordon Brown and David Cameron in PMQs; and very fierce exchanges b/w both men both eager to align themselves to the biggest global star right now, Presdent-elect - Barack Obama

And to hilarious hoots of laughter on both sides - it was all about this exchange:

Cameron to GB: When you called President Obama to congratulate him, did you say to him 'this is no time for a novice' (GB's diss at Cameron at the last Labour conference).

Gordon Brown to Cameron: No i said to him that the american people voted for 'serious people for serious times' (another GB diss aimed at Cameron).

Brilliant.

Verdict: a draw.

: )

D

D, take the Tory glasses off mate! That was a Brown win, hands down. Funny to watch all the leaders trying to align themselves with Obama in some way though!

Working from home today and got to say the BBC News coverage is as bad as Dimbleby was last night.

the tories have nothing in common with obama, they were aligned with john mccain
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2006/au...ives.johnmccain
if anything they should be a bit more dignified and congratulate him and his party just as mccain has done.

now if they can jog on and let america celebrate in peace, thanks

just remembered that I could barely sleep last night. I didnt think I'd be affected by all this, but I was. Got up and felt like welling up

lets not fool ourselves... he aint gonna change things overnight, he's close to big business, he'll cock stuff up

but he's improved the image of the US globally and will be treated with more respect by leaders in the increasingly powerful middle east

i just cant get my head round a black president but need to focus on his policy decisions rather than his colour

hahaha nah, it was a draw mate wink.gif

But seriously, the 'novice' card (as i 'argued' on Monday) is a strong card for Cameron to play; especially as long as he continues to lead in the opinion polls - and one poll last weekend gave him [surprisingly] a 14 point lead, while others have him [more accurately] b/w 8&10 points ahead. Still enough to put him in 10 Downing Street. Interesting times...

I echo the sentiment in Marco Polo's excellent response on page 10

What Obama does himself, time will tell, though I see sincerity and grounding in him that is not often apparent in politicians, and with some, as with John McCain, only when they reveal their true character, and not the one sponsored by the party (a heartfelt concession speech, said much more about the man than anything beforehand)

It's what he has done to the US and the world around us that puts this down as a defining moment...lets hope it's the start of many more

A toast to democracy, and the voice of the people...

Watched the BBC coverage last night and the first pro-Republican female commentator was pretty hot, had a wee look of Penelope Cruz.

Simon Schama vs John "Total Dickhead" Bolton was a good face off, looked like both were straining at the leash to have a proper go at each other.

When Pennsylvania stayed Democrat, it just sort of felt like, yep, it's ON! As it thankfully turned out to be. Got to respect McCain for giving a very generous and humble concession too (despite the fuckin rednecks in the crowd booing).

See the Russians didnt send their congratulations and used the news as a way of highlighting their more and more bellicose face off with the US this morning.

John Bolton is a complete and utter dick, and spouts complete bullshit most of the time.

Did you see him arguing with the correspondant at the McCain headquarters about the detremental effect Sarah Palin had on the Republican ticket? He just couldn't accept the fact that beyond the hardcore, Christian right-wing of the party most reasonable Republicans and the majority of Americans realised that she was totally inadequate as a candidate.

What a brilliant day it is today.

Unless I heard it wrong I thought I heard on the radio yesterday that Robert Kennedy predicted America would have a black President in forty years time. That was in 1968 before he got shot.

Good call Bobby!

Let's hope the CIA don't take out Obama too.

He's a massive whopper, nikes my man.

Was one of the most brass-necked of Bush's moves to make him Ambassador to the UN after basically saying that the UN was completely pointless and useless.

@ Neil - yeah, I saw that - totally wasnt listening to what the correspondent was saying and just talking over her. His views are generally to the right of right wing, backed with an uber-sanctimonious attitude that his word is gospel.

For all the cynicism that swirls around politics, I do believe this is a very special and siginificant time. Obama now has a mandate that is incontestable, and Republicans can feel fortunate that they will have a President who will work for them too. That hasn't been the case very often. The electoral map has been redrawn to a significant extent, though the South is still overwhelmingly red. Yet, Obama made huge gains on Kerry's performance in states like Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Misssissippi. That bodes well for the Democrats in the future, not to mention their performance in the Congress. Howard Dean deserves praise for his policy of committing to compete in all 50 states from 2004 when he assumed the Chair of the DNC. As was he the first the really engage, or be engaged by, young voters, pioneering internet donations and building an impressive grassroots network.

I'm not one for hyperbole but Obama is, as best I can tell, beyond doubt. He will have many problems and crises, but those are what make the man. Sure he will serve America's interests first and foremost, but he has demonstarted that he will do business in a very different way. For all the talk of the racial glass ceiling being shattered, one thing I appreciate from his campaign is the prominence given to young people like David Plouffe (relatively young) and more so Jon Favreau, his main speechwriter and only 26 years old. Many people of a similar and younger age have been put in very senior positions in the campaign. Perhaps ability will come to the fore ahead of received wisdom about age, experience, credentials etc. Maybe that will trickle down to other sectors of society and change how businesses approach their workforce. The likes of Myspace, Facebook, Google and others, companies now bigger than many of the mainstays of US economic life were created by college students and those barely out of their teens. If anything, this is a triumph of ability over conventional wisdom.

I think a significant philosophical change that Obama will seek to engender will be the primacy of personal responsibility while at the same time helping one another. It's about time America, and virtually every other country, started looking after those who offer little or no tax revenue, those who are most vulnerable in society. We'll see.

John Bolton was "rewarded" for his FL recount work back in 2000. He is a walking crime against fashion:

Cell-phone style videos are pouring in from celebrations all over last night. Big spontaneous crowds at the White House, Lincoln Memorial, and U-Street ("Black Broadway") in DC:

DC went for Obama by something like 90%.

More videos are out there i'm sure.
