really!? bugger.

that is a real shame, regardless of whether you still buy it or not, as Chaser has been the bible for the 'scene' since day one.

sure PB has looked into all the options, hope so, as the ads that mags like Vice get could easily be placed in Chaser as well. maybe he needs to find a understanding publisher to do the ad side of things and let him do the editorial side as he wants to.....

shame - big shame - PB and his team are an excellent crew and have done much to support and grow the 'scene' - next year is their 20th Birthday - well worth supporting

* the magazine was not produced in a format that was favourable to distributors, 5 issues a year does not fit into a convenient cycle *

There's not much money in printed magzines these days I guess, especially with something as specialist as this. Those thick pages must of cost a fortune.
I think the 'scene' needs to be a little sexier tongue.gif

really sad news - the magazine was like others have said, the bible for the scene - but without even knowing how much the mag cost to print it must of been a fair old wack. The stock of the paper was ridiculous - way to heavy (but nice - if they could afford it - mmmmm....lovely smell). The way the mag was designed typographically didn't help matters in order to keep the price down (ie: a 4 page spread on an artist when there's only enough copy to fill 3/4 of one page) was sometimes ridiculous (props to swifty tho for some amazing graphics).

I do hope they come back tho - I'd hate to see it stop being published, maybe cut it down to size, A5 - nice little booklet - keep up the quality but just remove all the uneeded chaff.

Oh - and a request to the future artworkers- check those images are 300 dpi before you print the frockers - some months the ads were truely shocking!

which reminds me - you remember when we talked about having a brownswood book? I'm off to the casino tonight and if I win big I'm gonna do it for sure...

That is sad news but maybe after years of doing things the same way it could lead to an interesting revamp -- fresh format, pdf distribution and limited print run, mix of frequent online content and more occasional, substantive printed editions. Who knows? Something really artful and informative on line with direct links to download distribution and/or artists' sites would be appealing to me -- articles that tell a story through words/images/sounds with easy access to point of purchase. (??)

I've been working with Paul Bradshaw on the "where next" for a while.

As you can imagine, this has been probably the most difficult decision of Paul's career. He hasn't taken this decision easily, or because he's made a pot of money.

He's going to have some amazing digging in the archive in this last edition, along with some interviews with some of the key people who have made this one of the most long-running, innovative and consistent friends of the scene to have come from the UK.

One thing I wanted to let Brownswood know about first is that I've suggested that there's a couple of pages for readers to give messages to chaser. As Paul's got bills to pay, they'll cost. But it's going to be a part of history. It'll be the last one. Like the first, I'm sure this will be a serious collectors' item. I for one will want to be a part of this, and have my say.

This is going to go live on Monday. From then you can send an email with the text that you want to info@straightnochaser.co.uk and in the subject put "ATTN: BIG UP!"

The prices are super reasonable too. They're going to be done in 20 word blocks (each block costing £15 - so £15 for up to 20, £30 for 20 to 40 etc...). I don't think he'll sell more than 3 blocks to one person though, as he wants to get as many messages on the pages as possible.

Feel free to cut and paste this message and send it to anyone you know who'll be interested.

Best,
Andrew

No chance of getting in a publisher to do the ad sales then Andrew?

You know the deal, where the outside publisher gets to keep 50-75% of the income they generate (or something similar), while also paying for the print costs?

Just a thought, that I am sure you have looked into already....

Yeah. Already explored. It's a long story probably over a beer...

But you know Paul's hard-core about that stuff. It only started doing ads on the back page a few years back. That used to be "clean". For me, it's always been a fanzine rather than a business. A real labour of love.

Suffice it to say, it's time for a change and to move on. Either way, we won't see the mag in this form again. So it's the end of an era.

Sad news. I feel a bit conflicted as I've bought the mag for at least 10 years but then again I guess its people like me sat at our computers that have changed the world of publishing... sad as I thought the two could exist side by side (I don't want to sit with my laptop down the beach or in the dentist's waiting room)..

Big up to Mr Bradshaw for flying the flag for this scene and importantly keeping it independent. Publishing a magazine covering a niche music is difficult and costly. Some of the independent magzines I have worked for have had either a wealthy backer or the publisher has been allowed some editorial input. Chaser has managed with neither.

On a personal level, in a fiercly competitive industry, Paul Bradshaw has always been as nice as pie. Still the worst returner of e-mails/phone calls ever - despite me interviewing Joyce at his desk!

Now may be good time to produce either a limited reprint of the sold out back issues and/ or a limited edition book containing all the articles from issue 1 upto the final one.

I reckon they would fly out.
