In response to Gilles' request about celebrating 75 Years of Maida Vale vis-à-vis his Worldwide show, my choice would be either Bilal's [acoustic] recording of "Sometimes" or Zero 7's "This World". Both, stunning Maida Vale recordings. Yours??
It was nice to hear the Maida Vale session of the Sa-Ra Creative Partners' "Rosebuds", again. I’d forgotten about that session, to be honest. Brilliant!
All of Gilles' Maida Vale sessions over the years have been special. I’ve been fortunate to witness a number of them (Thanks again, Gilles). I will never forget being in attendance for Kindred's Maida Vale session in 2003 [I think it was]. Roy Ayers made a cameo appearance/contribution in that session. I also got to have a little chat with him as well! Long may the Maida Vale sessions continue.
Some of the tunes I'm feeling so far from this week's show:
1. Ndikho Xaba & The Natives "Shwabada" – Beautiful beautiful Jazz (my kinda shit). Does Gilles ever come back from his travels empty-handed?!?
Holy Grail! Which one of their tracks did Jazzman reissue? Cheers.
2. Michelle Shaprow "Back Down To Earth" – Love this. My kinda leftfield soul. And, I've just remembered that I forgot to mention in my Big Chill review [in my Monday AfterChill post, a few months back] that Michelle was in attendance at Norman Jay's Motown anniversary gig at the Big Chill (she and Norman had a little chat, as well!). And speaking of leftfield soul...
3. Zed Bias feat Tawiah "Further Away" – Good to hear this one again (shout to Benji B). Dark! BIG TUNE. and STILL keeping it on a leftfield soulful tip…
4. Me'Shell NdegeOcello "Die Young" – Niceness. And I can't believe that Me'shell has been going now for almost 20 years (funny how time flies). I remember how her debut Plantation Lullabies album caused ripples in the scene In the early 9Os. "Call Me" (gosh!) & "If That Was Your Boyfriend" rocked it in the more discerning clubs back then. I also had - and still have - a softspot for "Outside Your Door" on the album. DREAD TUNE!
5. Theophilus London "Cold Pillow" – Love this tune. I remember raving about it a few months ago when Gilles exclusively played it on his show. Good to hear him live in the studio with Gilles; I thought he came across really well. Shout to Peggy!
6. New Look "Everything" – this is without a doubt one of my fave WW tracks of the year. Stunning leftfield soul. Big music.
*I was feeling Dam Funk's thoughts re 'passing the information and extending the knowledge' in the Words & Music segment of the show. He opined on how he is a great believer in sharing the knowledge. Yes sir, I hear you. Respect!
Playing in my speaker right now…
Ryan Leslie feat. Pusha T "Something That I Like" – shockingly nice. A party track!

I'm well aware it's available in its entirety on volume 2 of the Roots "Homegrown" album, but the full 16-minute version of "The Seed / Melting Pot", is a must.

Cheers Greg. Much obliged. Can't stop 'rewinding' the "Shwabada" track that Gilles played. Stunning Jazz!

I like the Raah Project sound, kind of a cross between Darkstar Kilimandjaro Jazz Ensemble and Jun Miyake.
As for Maida vale favorites I'd have to go to Lewis taylor Stoned love part 1 back in 2003 and The Beauty Room session from 2006.

Can't stop playing Zed Bias/Tawiah "Further Away". Love the dark nasty groove underneath Tawiah's gorgeous voice (the sort of groove Silkie played the other day at Deviation).
