nikes, i think i have the dell xp "ghost" somewhere (the install cd). u can install that, then use service packs to upgrade. it's annoying but you'll be happy in the end. i can help you sort it aiight. you can pay me in prog edits.

i have no files on the computer so backing up is not an issue.

this is the extent of my ineptitude: would i install w7 over vista? do i have to somehow uninstall vista first? how much is w7 *goes to search price*

at the end of the day i am some kind of techno nob. been crashin'computers since the early 90s. mobile phones, hard disc video recorders, GPS devices.. these all are not compatible with my brain>hand interface. basically anything domestic electronic.

it usually installs over vista, unless you plan to downgrade to a lower edition. look for the systembuilder versions, they are quite cheap (win 7 professional for about €115).

Windows 7 is supposed to be a big improvement, it has to be really, the only way it could be worse than Vista is if Steve Ballmer personally shit inside every box. I couldn't care less about Windows any more, I've not tested it yet. I'll probably be retired by the time my work gets round to rolling it out. There's tons of different editions to make it more confusing for consumers.

I wouldn't install over the top, format your drive and do a fresh install. If Dell will send you a disc it might come with all the drivers on so you won't have to faff about downloading loads of drivers.

Is it a new laptop? If so, try get a free upgrade, lots of suppliers are offering them. Or buy a laptop with Windows 7 on it. Or better yet, buy a MacBook.
