Javi- 12-22-2008
anyone??

spreadlove- 12-22-2008
Myself and a friend made the trip down for this - our first Shiftless Shuffle.

Had a fantastic time - the venue was busy but not too packed to have a dance.

Good group of dancers were doing their thing throughout the night. Some wicked moves - more room than in Dingwalls for the somersaults etc. One guy was doing multiple splits in time with the drops on Mother of the Future.

Tunes I recognised were

Art Blakey - Night in Tunisia
Fuse One - that "Human Spirit" tune
Mother of the Future
A jazz funk tune that stood out like a sore thumb from all the jazz - got it somewhere at home on a Mastercuts LP but can't remember the name

Great little session - Gilles got on the mike and was bigging up Perry Louis for keeping the scene alive - here here to that!

What did Sylvester play?

surely he played some latin?

spreadlove- 12-22-2008
Yes he did but I would say not as much as I was expecting having only heard him at Carnival before. I don't know enough Latin to have recognised any of the tunes though!

Him and Gilles were going back to back for the last 40 mins or so - was hard to tell who was playing what.

There were some wicked batcudas played though and some proper hotfooting going off.

Does Sylvester still play at Carnival and where does he DJ the rest of the year?

Also

John Klemmer "Brazillica" got a big reaction and Gilles mentioned over the mic that he is hoping to get John Klemmer over to the UK to do a gig in 2009.

I think that Jazz Funk tune which escaped me earlier was Ramsey Lewis "Spring High"...

Glad it was a good session- being hit by a heavy cold prevented me from reaching- was looking forward to it as well..

Sylvester still plays carnival- Brazilian on the Saturday and Salsa\Latin Jazz on the Sunday- I last heard him play in a club about 3 years ago but it was more on the Salsa tip (he always has spun on the jazz dance and Salsa scenes) . I think he plays mainly on the salsa scene these days- If he was playing at jazz dance events I pretty sure the word would be out.

He use to play at the Southport weekenders but hasn't done for a while.

Sylvester was the DJ at the Jazz fusion battle between Back Street kids and Brothers in jazz (its on youtube)

I'm Hoping to attend Shuffle and out to lunch during 09. Props to everyone (Djs, punters and dancers) for keeping this scene alive.

Laid low with a heavy cold last night so bailed out in the end (poor show) - gutted - my living room floor is still covered in record sleeves by Louie Bellson, John Payne and Pointer Sisters which I played all evening to compensate. Hardly had a Sunday free all year so haven't been down for ages - need to make a better effort in 2009.

Messin around has moved venue, by the way; it's at the 100 club now.

having spent thurs, fri and sat on late booze fueled nights out I was a bit cream crackered by Shiftless so only managed a couple of hours at the back half attempting to dance

Thought Sylvester was very very good though, the dancers were on it, Perry gave another lovely little speech and Gilles took it to another place (he was also very good on sat despite being knackered)

very much ready for a relaxed xmas doing very little now!

specialeggmonkey- 12-22-2008
yeah gilles played a great set, although i couldn't stay for all of it due to extreme tiredness.

I've never been to SS before, can't believe it, always seem to miss it, but now I think i'll take up some of those lessons in the New Year!

Speaking of Gilles....
Can i just take a minute to BIG UP ;-) Gilles...

He had a most mental week of DJing and still managed to make it all the way to New Cross for Lend Me Your Ears @ The Amersham even when he had to go collect a car from the airport in between landing home from Rotterdam and minding his kids!!

Its really great to see someone of his profile be willing to give up their Saturday night to play at a charity event.

What a guy.
Je suis most impressed
