My good lady is so paranoid about this whole experiment it's unreal......it's our anniversary on 10th as well - I'm hoping the news coverage will be minimal and we can get on with our celebrations as if nothing is happnin'......surely it's all been sussed out and all will be OK and I can enjoy an unfraught evening......

According The Guardian article which Kirk provided a link to she needn't worry, on the 10th they are going to try to get 'a beam of subatomic particles called protons circulating inside it'. They aren't going to be colliding particles for at least another month.

€6.4 billion?

What a fucking waste of money and time.

Another monument marking the absurdity of reductionism.

It's one thing to be a 'fan' of theoretical physics (i.e. the scientific progress it makes) and another thing to see it as an objective discipline which deserves the focus and attention of such a huge amount of money as it does.

It's understandable why people get worried when you're pushing nature beyond its limits like this; the public need to wake up and realize how highly unstable and non-natural particle physics is (as well as the sheer amount of money that is, imo, wasted).

Antagonisingly yours,

But there are loads of subatomic particles which collide into eachother at high velocity in space all the time, very close to Earth, and they do not create black holes!

As for waste of money: Loads of our technological advances which have lead to everyday life becoming more interesting / easier (eg. the microchip leading to computers) came from understanding of particle physics and quantum theory etc.... so it does have a positive impact on our society, albeit via distant extrapolation.

And if the experiments provide us with a means of time travel, I'm all for it!

"According to the theory, every particle in the universe has a slightly overweight but invisible twin"

I think I've got one of those, but that my body got swapped for the invisible one.

Maybe microchips came from alien spacecraft which crash landed.

I always thought it was strange that there was a massive leap from primitive valve based computers to microchips in a relatively short period of time.

I might start a conspiracy theory! wink.gif

LOLLY!!!!!!!

this thread is awesome: science-based rap, talk of the end of the world, conspiracies and aliens, humourous venn diagrams, pie and flow charts.

Jimi Oh - maybe all these subatomic particles flying around will make your anniversary meal pasta cook that bit quicker?
