Finally, I got myself sorted and recorded a bit of Rhodes onto youtube, so I chose the first ever Rhodes solo I ever heard (waaaay before I got into Herbie). For all those Jay Kay haters (easy Kirk!) I cut out the vocals so all you've got is the KILLER part 2 of 'Blow Your Mind', which I come back to again and again.... I hope you enjoy it!
really interesting to see the chords you're using and more clearly how the phrasing of the solo fits around the groove... details that are somehow clearer when you're watching rather than listening.
got anymore on there...?

I remember (vaguely - it was a long time ago) watching Jamiroquai when I was about 16 at Plymouth Pavilions. It really was slim pickings down there in them days, but I have fond memories of that gig.
He maybe a tool, but his band were sh1t hot - especially Stuart Zender's 5 string bass with lights on it!

(thanks for removing vocals!)

Hey man, I haven't got any others up yet, but when I get time I'll definitely put some more solos up - Herbie, more Jamiroquai, whatever! I'm glad the voicings are a bit clearer when you watch the playing - it doesn't look like it but I was also hammering the Rhodes at times, which is important in some phrases because it changes the timbre too.
Stuart Zender's 5-string with lights was matched only by Toby Smith's plexiglass Rhodes

not wowed by the music much but i agree, it's really interesting to see your hands and fingers maybe adjust the balance > turn up the rhodes?

Hey Tom, I tend to forget that it's a piece that holds special memories for me, but it's not everybody's cuppa. You're spot on with the other comment too - the Rhodes probably is a bit quiet in the mix, although it's certainly audible. I just didn't want to ruin the track to listen to. I'll whack up the Rhodes level next time I record something for youtube. Cheers, Tom

When I was 16 and starting out on bass I wanted a bass like Zender's so bad!

Oh yeah man, my Rhodes has got to be one of the nicest in the UK. I imported it from the US and it was MINT (even the tolex is pristine) - one previous owner had neatly scratched his name into the tonebars - 'Lamar Edward Wayne'. The action's beautiful (now Dan Goldman aka jd73 worked his magic on it) and because it's hardly been used, there are no worn hammer tips - not even any grooves in them really. I also got the clavinet in new condition from a guy who'd found it boxed in a warehouse in Germany. I got the original Hohner cardboard box, manual, price tag, keys for the locks, toolkit, plexiglass music stand - everything! I intend to put more videos up of Herbie Hancock, Jamiroquai and anything other Rhodes / Clavinet tracks that people suggest, but the second half of term is looming ominously so hopefully I'll get a chance before Christmas...
and here is a jamiroquai cover on bass..
