Cheers for the tracklisting Dayo, and happy I identified Elvin right. Not surprising that it was recorded just before Love Supreme as the sound is so similar. Massive tune. Gonna listen to this again (4th time so far) to identify all the needs, plenty to be looking out for!

Tom Browne - "ByeGones (Aaron Jerome Rmx)"
This has been a MASSIVE highpoint of the summer tune for me - its popping out of everybodies mixes / podcats/radio shows at the moment
Regarding the Arthur Baker remix of Will downing not only did I not know that he had remixed him back in the day I had never heard this remix before either !!!

Sending my review all the way from menorca. Had it on the beach this morning and it made for very pleasurable vibes as I watched the waves gently lapping ashore (and the hot ladies). Will listen to it again in the next few days with tlist to hand whereby ill point out my highlights as it was all fresh to my ears. Thanks for the insight on why the music was chosen. Got strictly jazz 2 on the player also, but couldn't see 1 on Liam s site or would of grabbed to.
Missus tucked up in bed now as silly mare has managed to give herself heat stroke. Told her numerous time to get under the parasol for a bit but she insisted she was alright. I know nowt obviously.
Reet back to tune chillage and tan uptopping.

Marvin Gaye huh? That's a surprise. You've opened my ears and eyes to yet more beautiful work produced by him. Nice one Dayo.
* starts googling for the rekkid *
Really nice work both of you - will be rinsing Liam's yet again in the car over the coming days - haven't quite got to know it fully yet but i'm getting there and enjoying each minute of it.
:-)

Thanks for sharing Gents....I really should delve into the Beatcave more. This week has been a long week of nights and these 2 mixes have kept me company, except for a 20 minute stint on Wednesday when I got caught playing the music a bit too loudly by a boss that was still in the adjacent office at 2.30 in the morning!
Anyway, love the Strictly jazz 3 mix. A refreshing and balanced mix with a great all round tempo and lots of percussion to start with. Highlight of the mix was probably the Sam Sanders track - Loverly stuff!
Also had Liams house mix on between 4 and 6 which just seemed to suit my mood that I was in. Not into house that much but enjoyed it all the same.
Cheers!

Lovely work Dayo, enjoyed listening to this very much and it has had several airings. The whole thing is really nicely put together, a great variety of stuff. Loved everything on it but commented in more detail on a few select tracks below.
Strong French connection with many of these tracks, I can have a go at answering your question regarding the number of jazz artists recording in France Dayo. As I understand it prior to Civil Rights Act of 1964, the absence of America’s enforced segregation combined with the wide popularity of jazz in France at that time, and the large number of jazz clubs in Paris, created the conditions where many African American jazz musicians headed there to perform, record and also take up residence. Dexter Gordon and Bud Powell lived in the city for extended periods in the 60s. This also held true for other black artists such as the writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin who moved to Paris around this time and stayed there for much of his later life. In outline I think that’s the reason, though I stand to be corrected!!!
Don’t think I know this live version of “Long as your living”. Sounding great as do all of Abbey Lincoln’s vocals in this period with Max Roach. You describe this as “radical jazz music” which is spot on. Probably easy to underestimate just how radical Max Roach’s music at his point was, given the context of the times in which it was recorded.
“Orange bloom” is a definite favourite. Always liked the way this tune seems to combine the feel of the classic bossa piano trios with a slightly deeper feel.
Thanks for the dedication on the Patrice Rushen track Dayo. Appropriate really because my route into “proper” jazz was through the soul scene and this is exactly the type of track that was big in those areas.
As you say on the Michael White Dayo it’s very reminiscent of a Monday night Bass Clef vibe. The type of track I very much associate with Norman Jay when he has his chilled jazz hat on! One jazz LP in a similar vein that I picked up on through Mr. Jay was Jimmy Smith’s “Sit on it”…killer LP. Remember when the musiquarium and GP’s vibrazone clashed on Saturday lunchtimes, two tape decks were always required for the overlap!
The Pharoah Sanders piece really is a beautiful track. Very minimal. To me this track is also interesting in terms of what people understand the term “spiritual jazz” to mean. Over recent years it appears to have become attached to overtly afro-centric combos, often featuring chanting and waves of percussion. On the face of it this track is not as overtly African but the musical relationship between the bass, sax and guitar seems to recall the feel of the “West African bluesmen” such as the late great Ali Farka Touré… to my ears anyway. The above comments should in no way be interpreted as a dig against afro-centric, percussion fuelled “spiritual” jazz, which I love as much as the next man!!!! As Bal often says ALL jazz is spiritual.
Also loving the inclusion of Sam Sanders and I’d forgotten about that Marvin track.
All in all a lovely listen, possibly the best Strictly jazz, though I dug out volume 2 this weekend and that is still sounding great aswell. Glad to hear volume 4 is in the offing.
Full respect Dayo….. as always!
Cheers

Aswell as Dayo’s immense jazz mix also enjoyed Liam’s house selection, but thought I should put comments in a separate post rather than tagged onto my Strictly Jazz III comments. Nice work sir. Don’t tend to buy much of this type of stuff these days, but I do very much like this sound and this sounded great on the ipod over the last week or so. I’m going with the opener, Tom Browne, "Spacestation" and Arthur Baker’s take on Will Downing as faves.
Cheers
