Recently, someone (who shall remain nameless), dropped a bit of techno at a jazz dance club, so someone went over and took the needle of the record....The best and only response in my book.

Blimey!

A bit extreme.

Surely just stopping dancing would be enough?

fuckin ell, this is Out To Lunch in a nutshell, if they don't like it they don't dance no matter if it's new, old, be-bop, post bop, fusion or techno.

The first time I played there I went off at about 100mph (Dr Jekyll - Miles) and they all just stood there looking at me as if to say 'don't be silly sunshine' biggrin.gif

Really need to get this book. This scene massively interests me.

On a side note - I've been asked to do my first ever jazz dance set at long running nottingham night "Out to Lunch" in June and I'm starting to get a little nervous. Any tips from brownswooders who have played such gigs would be greatly appreciated! Let me get this straight - this isn't playing jazz music to people in a bar as background music while people get sauced. That's a piece of piss. No, this is a full on jazz dance. They come to move and you've gotta make em shake it. I've already starting picking the records out and despite being a little apprehensive I'm also massively excited about the possibility of playing some more modern fusion type stuff to them as the majority of the music played down there is in essence pure old school. I might even throw in some more contemporary wonky flavours from maybe the likes of IG Culture and co. Always remember the dancers going nuts when Red Rack Em played em Moonstarrs "Movin' on" and the like last year. Nearer the time I'll post up a proper event but it's a gig that's gotta be one of the scariest for me.

In regards to the Jazz dancers;
In my my experience, it's not the dancers you are narrow minded but certain promoters of these sessions.
I know for a fact that the so called 'Hard Core Dancers' enjoy and dance to new music and in a lot cases I think they dance better to new stuff than just performing tricks to old stuff,
I've seen them let loose at my sets to predominately new stuff and a lot of them say they are tired of hearing the same old tunes.
But the trouble is they enjoy the whole testosterone driven solos in the middle of a circle, which is aided by a well tried and tested tune, the DJ gets a boost from this and so it continues
So it's dancers themselves that have created this perception.
I've not done one of Jim's sessions so I can't comment on what the attitude is, but I know what dancers attend. My advise to Beane the Noodler would be to follow your instincts
and don't be afraid to stick your neck out, just be yourself enjoy and have some fun !

what I've decided to do is carry a few in my bag, but have a quick chat ealy doors, find out from the horse's mouth whether I'm wasting my time playing more broken stuff or as I suspect it would go down a storm

Did anyone go to the Roy Ayers concert in Camden at the Worlds End cira 89?
It had a Jazz dance competition which was getting judged by Gilles P and Patrick F and I think Norman Jay? It was filmed and advertised it was gonna be on telly but I never saw it. Did it ever get broadcast? The night also had a comedy section biggrin.gif which I quite remember wasn't that great and was just annoyed that they weren't getting on with Roy Ayers.

Anyone know where the boxing ring footage was filmed?

How can someone mistakenly put an "h" in years? Maybe he was going for some RP spelling?

My limited print run "typo edition" arrived on Saturday morning wink.gif - so have been dipping in and out over the weekend.

So far have read the Paul Murphy, Gilles and Hugh Albert interviews. Really good to see Snowboy has also interviewed Sheldon from the Cutting Edge. That was a surprise.

Good selection of flyers too - remember some of those "cock happy" ones.

Yes yes!!

Wrighty smashed it yesterday at the Out to lunch jazzdance!!!!

Brilliant set mate.... we need a full tracklisting. So good to hear the Zero dB remix of Grupo Batuque's "E Ruim". And the Bugz "zombie"!! I never thought they'd get down to that but they were loving it! Also need that LIVE version of Tania Marie "Yantra ta". That was heavy. Some brilliant dancing down there yesterday. That women was awesome.

Already started packing the bag for my debut next month. Can't wait!

Posted this weekend on Bradshaws Chaser Publications blog...

"Due to some unfortunate digital typografic errors in the first run of the book we re-submitted a corrected version to Authorhouse. The corrected galleys will be signed off this weekend and the book should be back live on-line and on sale by the end of next week.

The cost of the book via the Authorhouse web site is £15.99. We encourage all our friends and family to buy the book from there as Snowboy gets a far better royalty there than from Amazon and other on-line bookstores.

The 'official' shop price is £19.99 (or whatever they decide to charge).

Enjoy the blogspot... more info soon re. the 'Beyond The Ballroom event that Edge2009 are co-producing with the Barbican. on July 13th.

Thanks for your patience and support. Spread the word.

Cheers, I absolutely loved it, I'm still grinning now. All the dancers were fantastic but shouts have to go out to Rocky, who was so fast it was unbelievable, and that Japanese gut who spoke virtually no English but could dance like a demon. There reactions were intense and was good to get the edge of the floor people to give it some on the slower tracks too.

Tracklist below, not sure if this is the correct order but is approx right.
