The questions that should be asked now days is who is responsible for the so called great jazz dance scene's decline.....

advancing years and children would be good places to start looking

Funnily enough, although I rarely play it out...

Hi Mark,

When we were chatting at the Dingwalls session last November, while you were giving out the flyers for the book, (Jonny Kango couldn't make it up there that day with me and Loz if you remember) we were musing about your broken beats session at Sunrooms (Southend) last summer which absolutely smashed the place to bits. Did you ever get around to seeing if there is going to be a repeat of this, either there or anywhere else? It was the best event down that way for a long time and I'm eager for a return fixture! Cheers.

I'm glad you enjoyed that session mate. I always believed in Broken Beat from the beginning of People records, and a lot of it - to me - was Y2K Jazz Fusion, but there doesn't appear to be much or any being made now. That sound system was amazing that night, like a Reggae sound system almost.

I haven't given up on Southend, but while the current climate of every other bar, pub and restaraunt having a DJ playing lowest common denomination and with every venue offering binge-drink offers, I'd rather steer clear rather than having people shuffling up to me gurning asking for shite. I love my area and am proud of it's roots and heritage in underground Black music, but the better undergroud venues are all suffering, numbers-wise, aren't they? I did a Funk 45's night at Saks earlier this year that was 3/4 full but the next one there was about 40 people in because they went to see DJ Format at The Sun Rooms. That says to me that there is not enough of a hard-core to sustain a regular night in the area anymore. Perhaps a regular session at The Sun Rooms might be the way forward.

A few years back when Gilles and I did the Zero 6, I was hoping that would become a regular event. There was about 700 people dancing from Broken to Samba to Afro Cuban to low-slung Hip Hop and the atmsphere was buzzing but it wasn't to be. Bugger.

Ah, Southend do not forsake us.

Right, anyone fancy a triple Red Bull and Vodka?

Local magazine Leftlion asked me to put together a few words last month about the Nottingham Jazz Dance scene. Here's a very small piece I wrote for the new issue of their mag. They've edited it a little bit and chopped it up a bit, but here's the general jist. In local shops as we speak >> clicky clicky click <<
