Hey, don't forget 'Ayoka' by E.W. Wainwright either..............

My Paradise Garage dig was whilst playing 'Pao Do Acucar' by Pacific Jam Alton, I believe. I may be wrong. It was hard to concentrate that afternoon because of (the usual) sound problems at Cargo. They employ, traditionally, the most unhelpful sound crew and make life difficult for any DJ who wants to play vinyl. We did our best to give you all a bloody good hiding anyway. I realise the importance of the Paradise Garage but I was in a boisterous mood and fancied sloganeering!

Regarding Robert Elms: He and Murphy (and Chris Sullivan) were very close. Elms was going out with Sade at the time and her band members Stuart Matthewman and Andy Hale were running Murphy and Ed Stokes Brighton session, which ran in tandem with the end of the Ballroom and early Wag. I think that Simon Booth, Chris Sullivan and Mark Webster will all defend Elm's position in our scene at the time. There was only Elms and Webster championing our movement in the press at the time remember. Simon Booth took him to The Horseshoe originally (I think it was The Ballroom actually). Simon knew him from shopping in Rays Jazz. He's an original Lacy Lady '75 punter and Goldminer too.

I've forgotten the name of the female dancer you refer to, but she's a funk dancer from Madame Jo Jo's. Vicious footwork. Then there was Juliet too (with the Afro).

I'm glad you all had a great time.

Thanks Mr. Snowboy for making this event possible. It was def worth for me to fly from Madrid just for this. I will put up some picts and videos when i have a minute. Also what a great reading the book is!!

Double jazzdance bill that evening since Shiftless Shuffle was also on -and quite busy btw despite unfortunately some dancers had to choose between the two events-. I made it to Shiftless at around 8ish and the vibe was off the scale with some heavy dancing as usual.

The female dancer you are talking about is called Vee I believe.

Re : The Book !
... and am on page 40/41 of the book so far ... so it may be covered further in ...
Some of my musical memories of the Horseshoe/Greenman times were that it also was part of the pre-Rare-Groove transition too ... tunes I heard for the first time at the Horseshoe/Greenman inc. Maceo "Soul Power '74"/Tommy Stewart "Bump'n'Hustle Music" also it was the first place I heard Clyde Alexander and Sanction "Got to get your love" ... fond memories ... smile.gif

Agreed. The following were just a few of the Jazz Funk/Rare Groove variety heard by my ears from the dex of Paul Murphy at The Horseshoe:
Zaius - Eddie Russ
Porcupine - Nature Zone
Superstrutt - Eumir Deodato
H + J = B - Larry Young
Slick Eddie - Sonny Stitt
Mardi Gras - Lonnie Liston Smith

Yes Vee, only met her a weeks ago at Jo Jos and in fact I told her about the Cargo session- We were discussing dancing and she said quote ' I have many styles!' I laughed and thought to myself that line could be straight from a Kung Fu movie!

Have to rate you for reaching over from Madrid for the session!

It was great to see you Javi. Thanks for the effort. It was a shame that our event fell on the same night as Shiftless. 'Beyond The Ballroom' was an event by The Barbican and could not be moved. Perry's session would have benefitted by the travelling dancers trying to fit two sessions in one night anyway, which is great - although Peterson played a blinder, so it's a pity some missed his set. I'm at Shiftless next month so perhaps I'll see you all down there.

Disk Dalek - I talk about Horseshoe (and 'the Green Man') on page 34, with a chart on 35. There's a great Jazz Funk chart on 34 as well, taken from Chris Hill's column in Blues And Soul in 1980. I couldn't go more indepth as I'd have liked at that point because I didn't want to lose the flow. Both clubs are talked about loads throughout the book though, so don't worry. Thanks for the great memories though (and you Alan - as always!). Mick Clark revived 'Soul Power 74' in '79 didn't he. By christ, I'd never heard anything like it in my life before then. It's funny how one takes those songs for granted now. Funnily enough, although I rarely play it out, I'm really enjoying 'Expansions' again recently and am getting the same feeling from it as when I first heard it in '78. And why not? I've played 'The Slide' by Chick Corea at every Jazz Dance session I've ever done (where heavy Jazz can be played) since George Power played it at Zhivagos all-dayer in Southend in '79 (or '80 - haven't got the record to hand). It still sounds new to me every time I hear it. I'll never tire of it. You wouldn't have heard that at the Paradise Garage either...................................!!!! Only kidding!

"You wouldn't have heard that at the Paradise Garage"
Catch phrase of the year mate! biggrin.gif
Just listened back to the Elms show via the beebs iplayer... great interview that..."Essex boy!"
I like the fact that for once he let you do the talking, he does have a tendency to go a bit Jonathan Ross and take over some times to polish his own ego but that chat came across really well. As I mentioned, credit where credits due Elm's was one of very few journalists to pick up on the scene in the early days... it just riled me at the time, back in 84, having followed Murphy from the Horseshoe to the Ballrooom that he couldn't even get his name right! I'd actually fully forgive him if he played the music he claims to love more than most a bit more often on his daily show too!..... Elms..... PLAY MORE JAZZ! wink.gif

ha ha ha....funniest post I have read in months...

Was Robert Elms part in Jazz history sandwiched between his creation of the British Punk scene or the New Romantic scene..I am getting confused because he claims to have been an integral part of every music scene going.

All this anal back slapping over who played this and that and at what time and what place is way over the top!

The questions that should be asked now days is who is responsible for the so called great jazz dance scene's decline.....
