Interesting radio interview with Paul Murphy in which he talks a bit more slim, italian chaos theories, gilles peterson jazz myths and tinkerings in the studio amongst other things...

Thanks for posting this. Great interview.
Has all the hallmarks of Murphy's wit and wisdom!

This post on B3ta still makes me laugh:

"Illuminous Horse of Course!
I once spray canned the words "I AM A CUNT HORSE" in massive letters on the side of a horse in illuminous green paint. Obviously I was very drunk.

However I nearly had a seisure 2 days later when I saw said Horse in the same field being scrubbed by a geezer as I flew past on the Blackpool - London train

Some excerpts from an interview with Paul Murphy (last year I believe it was?)

Particularly like the jazz horse bit.  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

Q:  Being one of the founding fathers of the UK jazz scene, can you describe how you felt at the time everything was taking off?

A:  Well it’s a bit like driving a car. Not that I've ever driven a car because I never learned or even was interested in learning. So I'm using my imagination here. Better to say piloting a spaceship or steering a boat or even riding a horse. I've never done those either. Well that’s not quite true because I have ridden a horse and it’s a lot of fun. It was a very old horse, slow too. But still a horse. So I can tell you this, I just got on board, or saddled up or whatever, and went where the jazz Horse took me.

Q:  What was the most interesting artist you’ve had to work with? Why? Any interesting idiosyncrasies?

A:  Slim Gaillard without a doubt. He was a big star (Hollywood and Music!) from the 1940’s who had ended up broke and potless in London. Luckily enough people had read “On the Road” by jack Kerouac to want to hang around with him, so he got quite a few jobs playing piano in various bands and he was always playing in the Wag Club when I was dj’ing there. He was 70’ish and he still always used to go off with the best looking girl in the place. Who, I should point out was at least 40 years younger than him. He was a cool cool dude of the highest order.

The Chris Hill interview is most excellent.

How could the same chap who spun Blue Notes later inflict "renta santa" on us?

What's the point in that? Guess they don't want any riff-raff.

gotta give Snowboy massive credit for doing the book.

it's immense. so much detail. so many interviews. would have like the full on money-no-object Taschen style coffee table version myself, full of full page pics and the like, but can totally understand why it is what it is. loving dipping in and out of the interviews at the moment.

Yes Sid.

1000 pages long, and weighing in at half a ton no doubt.

Sanj would still manage to read it cover to cover in 3 days...
