Loved this book. I reviewed it for flyglobalmusic.com Read a review of 'From Jazz Funk...'

"It was a scene that was not a single style of music but many, it was a scene where you could see people dancing in astonishing complexity and elegance (and not with a drug-induced grin on their faces and waving a can of beer around), a scene where black and white kids were not only at the same venue they hadn’t even noticed that there was anything unusual about it. "

Nice words Flyman.

Pop star Paul Murphy not too happy DJing at the Japanese Playboy Club:

"They gave me a crate of sixteen bottles of Absolut Vodka to quieten me down"

"Will it sell to people beyond the scene? I hope so but I think it might struggle to do that, the format of a series of interviews works well if you know who the people are but of course many readers will not"

Well put. Big up Flyman aka Damien Rafferty. I use to religiously read Damien's pieces in early Chasers and he was an influence on me in becoming a writer (reminds me I need to start posting on Fly again).

Fly was also the first music e-zine I really got into in '98 or '99.

Was it Paul Murphy, with the Blue Note, in the Jazz Room?

My copy arrived today, purchased from a record shop in Japan. And it's in Japanese! Serves me right.

Some excerpts from an interview with Paul Murphy (last year I believe it was?)

Particularly like the jazz horse bit. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Q: Being one of the founding fathers of the UK jazz scene, can you describe how you felt at the time everything was taking off?

A: Well it’s a bit like driving a car. Not that I've ever driven a car because I never learned or even was interested in learning. So I'm using my imagination here. Better to say piloting a spaceship or steering a boat or even riding a horse. I've never done those either. Well that’s not quite true because I have ridden a horse and it’s a lot of fun. It was a very old horse, slow too. But still a horse. So I can tell you this, I just got on board, or saddled up or whatever, and went where the jazz Horse took me.

Q: What was the most interesting artist you’ve had to work with? Why? Any interesting idiosyncrasies?

A: Slim Gaillard without a doubt. He was a big star (Hollywood and Music!) from the 1940’s who had ended up broke and potless in London. Luckily enough people had read “On the Road” by jack Kerouac to want to hang around with him, so he got quite a few jobs playing piano in various bands and he was always playing in the Wag Club when I was dj’ing there. He was 70’ish and he still always used to go off with the best looking girl in the place. Who, I should point out was at least 40 years younger than him. He was a cool cool dude of the highest order.

Interesting radio interview with Paul Murphy in which he talks a bit more slim, italian chaos theories, gilles peterson jazz myths and tinkerings in the studio amongst other things...
