Hi, My first post to this thread. Hi Paul, Snowy, Phil, 'Ammer and the rest who know me. I haven't read the book yet, but I'm now wondering if I should hold out for maybe a Ltd edition hardback version.
It's funny , reading the comments, I never thought that this sliver of sub culture that we were so busy living, could manifest itself to be relevant enough that even Yale University are ordering a van load.
Monumental effort, well done.
Just to fill in a few gaps..:
The Roy Ayers Camden Gig with the dance competition, was organised by Marshall Smith (IDJ).
The Boxing ring 'Dance Competition' was for '7 Sport' - Channel 4.
The Nelson Mandella 70th birthday is kindly being posted by 'Jazzdance' (Brum?), until I can source a cleaner copy...
Also there's a 'Tube' Bank Holliday Special - Channel 4 (Tyne-Tees), knocking around,
as well as an obscure The Gay Byrne Show - RTE (Dublin)
and an 'Altered Image' - Channel 4 (Art Magazine Show).

blimey, this thread is becoming a who's who of the jazz dance scene. Welcome along to the Don of the dancers, Jerry.

Yes, the Roy Ayers/Jazz Dance competition at the Underworld (Camden) is becoming a holy grail. I've never seen it. The Floor Technicians won it. It was the largest ever gathering of Jazz Dance troupes/crews by far and co-presented by legendary dancer from Preston - Dave Angol I beleive. EVERYONE is after it. Anyone out there got it?
I've never seen the Gay Byrne or Tube performance either. The Jazz Defektors did the Tube as well, by the way.
Damn!!!!!

Yes theres a fair amount of footage out there (I bet a lot is still to be liberated from VHS!)
Thanks for the info Jerry - some new ones to me as well there
Can you elaborate on the following, which channel was it filmed for and is there more from the same program? Thanks
South Of Watford 1984 (Granada TV). Got the whole programme on Betamax... as has Weegee I think.

Its a great piece of early 80's club culture. Concentrates on the whole Jazz Dance scene of that time. Has interviews with Gilles (looking really young)...
Also incs Chris Phillips, Baz Fe Jazz, Andy McConell, Tommy Chase and a few others. Its narrated by Hugh Laurie if memory serves and that clip is basically Jerry and the boys rehearsing. There's also some older clips of the wag with Gary Nurse (I think) and a soul all dayer and some stills of Paul Murphy and others.

Yes - I have this one on betamax - I was at the WAG the night they filmed Tommy Chase - look closely and you'll see me standing in my usual spot...

Sounds like there is a gap in the market for a compilation DVD of the footage!
Anyone?
Snowboy- 05-22-2009
I have this show. It's amazing. You are correct about the Hugh laurie narration. It would be impossible (I imagine) to do a legal compilation of all this footage because of copyright etc and the royalty fees. Who'd be mad enough to put out a pirate DVD these days?
Anyone got the British Hustle film from '79?
