WOW - history...........I was there meself with a whole host of Scottish ne'er do wells from the period: San Fraser, Nick, Speedy, Clive Greenhalgh, Cory - cool Scottish hipsters who knew more about Jazz back then than I do NOW - Gad knows where my ticket is - remember there used to be record dealers at the back? Lemme think wh was at that one? Tony 'Virgo Vibes' Poole / Jakey 'Hot Biscuit' (local lad, he was!) Martin 'Soul Explosion' Davis as I recall? And wasn't Jazzman Gerald there at that one too? Hazy....somebody help me...
Happy daze........
Jake was def there (brought loads of him over the years). Nick (the record) was prob there too seeing as it was in Brighton... he's a lot older than he looks you know.

As far as record dealers go I remember at one Jazz Bop spending a small fortune buying from Dave 'Mr. Bongo' Buttle, who had just come back from Venezuela with a stack of goodies !

Blimey look it's Snowboys much younger brother
Talking of people who ran record stalls what is Mark Lessener up to nowadays, I spent a small fortune with him. Everytime I went to a weekender or Dingwalls he was there

Great pics Phil, love Johnnys jacket, reminds me of the old Louis Jordan tees from way back when...
Wasn't Jackson Sloan in West Side Story Use to love that "Jack Kerouac Said" tune.

lovely pics. think my first year at the Jazz Bop was 1991. Jake was selling, as was Mark Wimmers (who's still selling and playing on the tropical front), think Dave Bongo / John Cooper may have been offering their wares too, maybe they were just there though. a long time ago in a pharmacy far far away.
Mark Res: nice to see you on here as well. When you say Nick from Scotland, you wouldn't be referring to Mr Peacock, would you?

Thanks for that Johnny Lytle pic. A great memory.
Paul Despy is still at Carmel records and still turning up absolute blinders. The last few years years I've purchased around a few hundred early 60's R&B Soul 45's from him - and nothing more than £10. Yes, he's one of the best dealers around. It's funny but I've been buying from that shop since 1975 when it was owned by experimental record producer Peter Eden (John Surman - Anglo Sax). He sold tons of rockin' stuff in those days. Marc Bolan discovered 'We Love To Boogie' from his shop. Paul Despy took over ownership in 1980. What a second -hand records goldmine it is. Right, that's it - I'm going to have to pop down there tomorrow now!
Dave from Mr Bongo didn't bring those Fania-related albums from Venesuela but they were Venesualan issues. He was a bit naughty charging collectors prices for those reissues. The influx did create a few dancefloor classics. If you get a chance to get my Fania compilation 'Afro Cuban Kaleidoscope' I talk about the impact of those reissues in my sleeve notes.

Great pictures indeed!
I'd forgotten the colour of his suit!
How did he get away it...
I remember buying Eddie Palmieri "live at sing sing vol. 2" that night - circa £20 I think. As you say naughty pricing. Later on shed loads of the venezuelan re-presses turned up in HMV for normal money and I bought loads of 'em.

haha im jealous snowboy i live in australia now but when i used to go to carmel records before i left it was never open! i thought it had closed down or something - i did hear that paul tends to open in the afternoons and was a bit of a hit and miss affair if he was open or not but he was NEVER open.. hopefully one day i can pop back in and get some bits
i remember hearing stories about peter eden - was donovan's manager or something? a lot of history in that shop and you are quite correct - a goldmine > a diggers paradise if you have got the time
late 80's early 90's i used to do the rounds on a saturday morning > carmel records in southend.. then brickhouse records in greys.. then off to crazy beat in upminster.. if i had time and hadnt picked much up it was off to sounds familiar in romford.. then home to brentwood.. ahhhhh to be young again!
say hello to paul for me send him my love
Snowboy- 05-18-2009
Yes, Carmel never opens before 3 o'clock because he's so busy with mail order, digging (or now) e-bay. He opens late though - officially 6pm but he doesn't look at his watch. It could be any time really. If anyones interested from out of the area - Carmel records address is 281a, London Road, Westcliff-On-Sea. It's a half a mile from Southend-On-Sea on the main road (A13) from London to Southend. save some goodies for me though!
You're correct about Peter Eden being Donovans original manager. Pete acheived an incredible ammount in his career as a record producer/song writer but won't be interviewed now about it. He's a Jehoviahs Witness (although I don't know in what way it prohibits him from talking about his past career).
Modalbailey, I'll pass on my regards but I don't know your real name. PM me if you like.

I don't think I'm missing much or anything from that period as far as I know - Jazz Dance scene related
Do you have the Jazz Defektors dancing to "peanut vendor" - lalo schifrin, on Tony Wilson's TV show - "the other side of midnight"?
