call it what you want - my case for the defence of the 'fucking intelligent re-edit' - or FIRED - set:

picking up where the unabombers left off, graeme clark (the revenge), craig smith (6th borough), mark e , nick moore (linkwood), dave trusme, pilooski, todd terje - the best things to happen to the HOUSE scene in years. and they're all sitting in / lumped with the re-edit tag.

As Djs, they're qualitatively as exciting - more - than their US counterparts (theo / kdj) in terms of their selection and mixing technique.

Alot of their releases ( edits / remixes / whatever ) are predominately killer - as pretty accurately reflected in the supply/ demand price pressure. They have in many cases respectfully tweaked, deeepened, re-invigorated and made relevant again alot of classic / obscure gear from the past that rarely gets an airing.

Aside from copyright issues, they're still at the stage of releasing stuff leverage for their gigs versus a desire to be big time recording artists. Hence supply side price pressure. GREAT marketing. It's when they go off piste and aim for recording artiste status that it can go pear shaped ( exhibit a - unabombers )

Presonally all the above have switched me on to stuff I wouldn't otherwise have listened to or sought out (recent acquisition - original 12" copy of Keep it UP by BT Express, thanks to the revenge).

so - more power to the thinking mans re-edit set. they know the score, like.

Does the Mark E et al sound go over anyone else's head? I just can't seem to get into it.

Anyway

My favourite 're-edit' of recent times is Beatfanatics version of Vangelis 'Let it Happen' on GAMM

I've opened up a right old can of worms here ain't I

Anyway - back to the music, after giving this record a proper loud airing when I got home, I can safely say those clips don't do it justice (as most soundclips don't). There both very long and need to be heard programmed into a set properly. Tune into this weeks hotpot for further proof

Dunno bout you - but these have got the forthcoming boatyard boogaloo afternoon session written all over em biggrin.gif

Funny to read this nonsense... here's mine...

And then I read the post above and if there's a better example of sheep-buying than let me see it... The original lick of "Baby I'm scared of you" can be bought easily for 50p - 7" or LP - and is better than Mark E's version.

For me, re-edits can be worth picking up if they make tracks fit better into programed dj sets - such as the Credit to the Edit series - but a true re-edit, as Danny Rack Em suggests, uses only the original material and chops and changes it as required; remixes involve all manner of sourcery and I'd suggest that GAMM, Mindless Boogie et al are putting out remixes, re-edit (or re-anything else) is just a fashionable term to be filed alongside nu-balearic, nu-disco or any of those other shite terms that people have jumped on in the last 18-24 months.

I like Danny's mix of 'Stand On The Word' but no-one will ever improve on the original Levan mix; I like what Greg Wilson has done recently with Klein & MBO's "Dirty Talk" but the same applies; Mark E has only improved 'Moonshadow' as far as I can tell (and that's more because the original source was overly diva-ish), the Black Cock re-edits and those edits/remixes on Moton, GAMM and Mindless Boogie (among others) are hit and miss too.

As a DJ if you're playing a re-edit simply because it's a re-edit then why? You leave the door open for miserable buggers like me and Pickering to say "have you heard the original? it's a lot better than that shite"!

Here's a can of worms: aren't those 12" versions of tunes just a form of re-edit in themselves?

this is spherical infinity

question, is it possible to reedit this to make it longer, shorter or more enjoyable than the original?

I'd just erase the fvcker

Right, here's another one

take the beegees "staying alive". reedit it in half. Now, reedit one of the halves in half again. Cut one of the remainders into half, and this again, etc. The fact is, that no matter how many times you cut the song into half, you will never achieve a state where the length of the segment reaches zero, and you will never manage to make Barry Gibb sound like Barry White.
