well just to add my ten pence worth..

I think Edits/ Reversion/ Retouch/remixes etc etc have their place

But there are a lot of Crap ones about however there are some good ones

I think a lot of what I play currently would be classed as "Edits"

I don't see the point of putting an edit out of a track that doesnt "do" something different than what it did originally

Agreed.

Two 'recent' edits that I consider music in their own right and enjoy immensely:

- Love me like this - floatingpoints
- Night flight - the revenge

Two 'recent' edits that I thought were utter shyte

- Theos edit of minnie rippertons 'Reasons' -

- That marvin gaye debacle

Begs the question - favourite re-edit of all time?

For me: - Michael Jackson - I can't help it - Tango Terje edit - about 10 minutes long and lovvvvvvvely

The Bee Gees 'Love You Inside Out' is a bad bad tune to begin with.

Just felt that needed to be said.

A re-edit should either do something different with the original (like the best of Mark E's efforts, although they should probably be called remixes), or be better than the original; by improving the arrangement, (often) repeating the best bits and cutting back weaker vocal sections (like the J&M re-edit of 'Evening of Love')

Many re-edits have poor sound quality and are a waste of time. Many are quite lazily 'dubbed out' and lack the impact and edge of the original and are a waste of time.

Most seem a way of making money from someone else's music.

Terje's 'I want your love' re-edit is my favourite effort I can think of over the last year or so.

Guilty as charged...or was that a remix mmm ?

Love Me Like This is a remix in my book - it uses elements from the orginal song and FPS has played, programmed and re-arranged it into a new track. Is it an edit if it's unsolicited and a remix if it's legit? To me an edit is the most basic form of remixing a track when you use loops and rearrange/extend/cut out sections of the track. How come sampling part of a track and adding loads of new stuff still makes it an edit? Surely then all big sample based hip hop is just a load of re-edits with someone rapping over them?? So Pete Rock et al are just doing re-edits then? What's the difference between someone rapping over a loop and someone playing a load of keys/detroit pads over a loop?

When I were a lad, if you followed the 'rules' an edit was when you only used the original track as your source material and didn't add anything else in. Then along came things like Baby I'm Scared and the definition of an edit was slightly re-defined. But forgive me if I am wrong but I didn't hear any Carl Craig pads in the original version...

What's the difference between a re-work and a remix btw?
